Many sites offer virtual currency systems and a "shop" in the form of threads. Flumen Vitae also has a currency system, but it is automated.
Our currency is called coins, and your coin balance is displayed with the dollar sign $ on your profile. You can earn coins through posting and creating polls. A reply earns you 5 coins. A poll earns you 5 coins. A thread earns you 10 coins. You may also earn coins through advertising Flumen Vitae and through certain contests. You start with 0 coins when you register, but the more active you are, the more coins you'll earn. Your "balance" is also called your Stash.
In addition to a monetary system, we also have an automatic shop called the Market, where you can spend your coins on IC items, like unusual eye colors and disabilities, and OOC items, like more character slots. To purchase an item, select how many of an item you'd like and click Add to Basket. When you're done, click on Basket - this is where you can either purchase the items or remove items from your basket. Click Checkout and you're done! You also have the ability to trade items or gift items or coins to other users on their profile.
